Potency and Dose

The following guidelines apply to home-prescribing for simple, self-limiting complaints.

Potencies

  • Low Potencies: 6C and below

  • Medium Potencies: 30C and 200C

  • High Potencies: M and above (do not dose with M or higher potencies if not prescribed by your consulting Homeopath)

Lower potencies such as 6C cover a wide range of symptoms, so are ideal if you are not certain that you have chosen the best remedy for your symptoms.

Higher potencies need to match symptoms more precisely if a curative response is to be triggered.

As a general rule, the higher the potency, the longer the effect. A 6C potency may need to be repeated every 1 – 2 hours for a brief period before symptoms improve while an M potency may only have to be given once.

Medium potencies such as 30C are a good choice for home prescribers who have some familiarity with homeopathy. They can be given every 2 – 4 hours until symptoms improve and then only repeated if symptoms return. Improvement should be noticed by 1 – 3 doses if the correct remedy has been selected.

Dose

People are often surprised to learn that babies, children and adults can all have the same sized dose of a remedy without any risk of toxic effects or addiction.

This is because homeopathy is an energetic rather than a chemical system of medicine that doesn’t poison or create dependency no matter how large the dose is.

One dose equals one pill or pellet, or ¼ dropper (5-7 drops) of liquid taken by mouth. It’s not necessary for the remedy to be placed under the tongue or to be swallowed.

One dose = one tablet or droplet.

Two tablets will have the same effect as one tablet. Three tablets will have the same effect as one tablet.

If you buy a remedy from a store and it says give 3 tablets - you don't need to - it is the same as one tablet.

Sometimes you may want to put a pillule into a glass of water and just sip the water. It is hard to understand how one droplet added to a bowl of water, still needs to be one drop - all I can say is try it! One drop will have the same effect as three drops.

  • Give one well-chosen remedy

  • Wait and see what happens

  • If nothing happens - repeat in one hour

  • If something changes - wait

  • If symptoms begin to improve - wait

  • If symptoms return - give a second dose

  • If new symptoms show then take the case again and check which remedy should be given now.

  • If after three remedies symptoms are not improved - retake the case and find another remedy to match the symptoms

  • If symptoms improve but then keep returning consult a homeopath.

Only give one remedy at a time

There are certain circumstances when you might want to give two separate remedies.

An example is after a medical procedure or operation. You might then have arnica and calendula. Give one in the morning and the other in the evening. Do not give two remedies together.

The remedy

The remedy needs to be absorbed through the lining of the mouth - this way, it goes straight into the bloodstream without going into the stomach.

Just suck the pillule until dissolved.

They are not unpleasant and you will find most children are happy to take homeopathic remedies.
